Robert Lynn Matthews, Sr.

Robert Lynn Matthews, Sr. of Scurry, Texas, passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the age of 80.

Robert was born on March 9, 1941 in De Kalb, Texas, to Sylvester & Dovie Matthews. He married Phyllis Vaught Reed on March 9, 1984 and they made their home in Scurry, Texas. Their blended family included six beloved boys: Robert Lynn Matthews Jr, Johnny Boyd Matthews, Steven Ray Matthews, Robert Troy Landrum, Jarrod Scott Reed and Jason Trent Reed. Robert retired from Union Pacific Motor Freight in 1998. 

Robert and Phyllis have attended Warsaw Baptist Church for the past 15 years. It was later in life when Robert came to faith in the Lord and his love for the Lord sustained him until his death. He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 2006 and was given 14 months to live even with treatment, but GOD gave him 15 more years. Robert absolutely loved gospel music, working on his farm, his many friends, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his boys and Phyllis. 

To cherish his memory, Robert leaves behind his wife Phyllis of Scurry, Texas; sons: Robert Jr and wife Sarah of Princeton, North Carolina, Johnny “JB” Matthews and wife Debbie of Bonney Lake, Washington, Steve Matthews and wife Chrystel, of Shoreline, Washington, Troy Landrum of Greeley, Colorado, and Trent Reed and wife Denise of Kemp, Texas; 21 grandchildren: Stormi, Beth, Nick, Beau, Tia, Nina, Zach, Molly, Tyler, Amanda, Heather, Tory, Joe, Jane, Nessa, Taylor, Shelby, Erica, Sarah, Kevin and Kalyn; 17 great-grandchildren with three more on the way; as well as his many extended relatives and many beloved friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Dovie, brothers George Wilson and Johnny O’Neal, sister Mary Evelyn; son Jarrod Reed; and grandson Johnny Aaron Robert Matthews.
