Garry Lynn McGregor

Garry Lynn McGregor, a cherished educator, athletic coach, and athletic director, passed away on February 28th, 2024, following an extended illness. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and warmth that will forever be treasured by those whose lives he touched.

Born on July 24th, 1949, in Athens, Texas, Garry dedicated 23 years to the United States Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. His service extended onto the USS Midway, where he worked in the Captain's office. Garry's commitment to his country was unwavering and noble.

Garry's impact as an educator and mentor was profound. He graduated from Athens High School in 1967, and he later earned his Master's degree and Ed.D. from East Texas State University. Throughout his teaching career, he inspired countless student athletes both academically and athletically.

Not only was he a servant in the public arena, he was also a man of deep faith. He grew up part of Bethel Christian Church in Athens, and he served as an elder and Bible teacher at Gardner St. Church of Christ in Borger and Kaufman Church of Christ.  Additionally, he volunteered at the American Red Cross and The Center food pantry.

He loved sports, fishing, running, and Texas history. Garry shared this passion with others and created lasting memories. His sense of humor filled every room he entered, bringing laughter wherever he went.

Garry was preceded in death by his father Gene McGregor, mother Lillian Elizabeth Crabtree, brother-in-law Chester Dixon, and sister-in-law Sherry Smith. Those remaining to cherish his memories include his beloved spouse of 54 years, Connie; his daughter Susan Goodman and her husband Tommy; his son James McGregor; granddaughter Jordan Sawka and her husband Ty; granddaughter Tommi Ann Goodman; granddaughter Katie McGregor; brother Larry McGregor and his wife Barbara; sister Anita Dixon; along with a host of other family members and friends.

The visitation is from 1:30 to 2:30 on Sunday, March 3rd at Kaufman Church of Christ and precedes the Celebration of Life service beginning at 2:30 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Kaufman.

Garry McGregor's spirit lives on through the lives he influenced and the love he shared. He is deeply missed and will always be remembered fondly for his kindness, wisdom, and loving spirit.
