Mary Elizabeth Pettigrew

Mary Elizabeth "Liz” McKenzie Mullins Pettigrew of Kaufman, TX died October 9, 2016 of small cell lung cancer at the age of 70. She was born July 21, 1946, in Magnolia, Pike County, Mississippi to Lionel Jackson McKenzie and Mamie D. Lamkin McKenzie. She was the granddaughter of William Harrison McKenzie and Queen Ann Phelps McKenzie of McComb, MS and Glen Garry Lamkin and Alice Leona Elizabeth Ivy Lamkin of McComb, MS. She attended school at South Pike High School, Magnolia, MS and Trinity Valley Community College, Terrell, TX. In the mid 1960's, she worked with her parents at McKenzie Grocery Store, a store owned by her parents and previously owned by her grandparents. In 1968, she became the first women radio announcer for WCCA Radio in McComb, MS. When she moved to Dallas, TX in 1969, she went to work at Tracy-Locke Advertising, and later Nelson & Nelson, CPA. She lived in Mesquite, TX from June 1969 to June 1976 and then relocated to Kaufman. She was the owner of Liz's Fashions and Gift Shop in Kaufman. Crafting, genealogy, and gardening were her hobbies, and she was a past member of the Kaufman Garden Club. She was a member of Cottage Heights Baptist Church, which is now known as Grace Fellowship. She was the fourth child of six children. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, and her brothers: Leon Jackson McKenzie, Glenn Harrison McKenzie, and Leroy Jackson "L.J." McKenzie, her sister Sandra Marlene McKenzie, and her husband Roger Herbert Pettigrew. She is survived by her sons: John Albert Mullins of Houston, TX and Shayne O'Neal Pettigrew Meyer of Galesburg, IL; daughters: Sonja Kay Mullins Downs & her husband Thomas David Downs of Kemp, TX, and Tonya LeAnn Pettigrew Ford & her husband Jeffery Lynn Ford of Kaufman, TX; grandchildren: Brian Scott Pettigrew, Dustin Ford Pettigrew, Devon Glenn Meyer, Christopher Dane Meyer, Brennan Cane Meyer, Hollyn Raine Meyer, Michael David Downs, and Leah Marie Downs Bruton; great grandchildren: Nathaniel Damon Pettigrew, Kayla Nicole Pettigrew, Kristen Elaine Pettigrew, Hayley Marie Pettigrew , AnaLisa Pettigrew, and Chandler Wayne Bruton; sister: Patricia Lynn McKenzie Mote Hall of Hattiesburg, MS, and sister-in-law Gloria Virginia Williams McKenzie of Magnolia, MS ; and many nephews and nieces. Visitation and viewing will be held at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home in Kaufman Texas on October 14, 2016 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Her funeral service will be held on October 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at Parker Ashworth Funeral Home and officiated by her great-nephew, Steven Hawkins. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren Scott, Dustin, Devon, and Michael and long time friends Freddy Rand and George Mayfield. Kaufman Cemetery will be her place of interment. Her family would like to thank Visiting Nurses Association for the care provided, close friends and neighbors Dennis Hogan, Jane Tallas, and Todd Tallas, and East Gate Church of Christ.
